In 2012, UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon launched the SDSN in order to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise that will undertake practical problem solving for sustainable development. SDSN supports its member institutions (universities, research institutes, civil society organizations, and other knowledge centers) around the world to play a leading role in sustainable development in four ways:
- as research centers;
- as key partners in problem solving alongside government, business, and civil society;
- as educators; and
- as social entrepreneurs in solution initiatives.
The Philippine chapter (SDSN-PH) was launched in August 3, 2015. The Keynote speaker was Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on SDGs and SDSN Director.
The first elected chair was Prof. Noel de Dios from the UP School of Economics. The current chair is Dr. Assunta Cuyegkeng from the Ateneo Institute of Sustainability. The network is composed of members of academe, business and civil society. There is also a Leadership Council and Executive Committee made up by the members from these institutions that assist the chair with current matters.
